Should You Pawn, Sell, or Keep Your Item?

Sometimes, you look around your home and realize you’ve been holding onto things you haven’t used in years. It could be an old guitar from a hobby you haven’t kept up with, jewelry you never wear, or a tool that’s been sitting in your garage gathering dust. Even though letting go of some of these items may sound like a simple decision at first, it’s common to second guess yourself and wonder if you’ll regret it.

Before you head to a pawn shop, ask yourself a few questions and figure out if it’s best to pawn, sell, or hold onto your item.

Should You Hold Onto It?

Asking yourself a few practical questions is the first step in making this decision. Consider if you actually use the item; if you haven’t touched it in years, that’s a good sign that you’re ready to let it go. Some people, for example, try to learn a new instrument or new hobby but realize it’s not for them. Instead of holding onto items in good condition that you’ll never use again, selling them may make more sense.

Still, it’s important to remember that certain items require a bit more consideration. For example, many people don’t regularly use their power tools, but that doesn’t mean selling them is a practical choice. If you sell these tools and do need to use them for a project down the road, replacing them will be expensive. The same goes for things like camping gear or specialty kitchen equipment: you may not use them every week, but if they still serve a purpose in your life, they’re probably worth keeping.

The final factor to consider is sentimental value. It’s okay to get rid of an item that’s been passed down by family, even if it may feel uncomfortable. Keep the sentimental items that are truly valuable to you, but you don’t need to hold onto everything. Before deciding to sell something with family history, though, consider whether another relative might want it.

When Selling Makes More Sense

If you’ve already decided it isn’t worth it to hold onto an item and you want to earn some extra cash, you can sell it to your local pawn shop. Maybe it’s taking up too much space or you’ve already upgraded to a newer model. Maybe you believe someone else would make much more use of it than you ever will. Just because you don’t use an item, it doesn’t make it worthless; it just means it doesn’t fit in your life. A good item sitting in your closet isn’t doing anything for you right now, but selling it means you’ll get extra cash and put it in the hands of someone who can actually use it.

Fullerton Pawners in Chicago, easily accessible from neighborhoods throughout the Chicagoland area, has been a go-to pawn shop for locals since 1994. When Pawning Makes More Sense

Sometimes you just can’t be sure if you’re ready to permanently part with an item, whether that’s because it has sentimental value or because you think there’s a chance you’ll want to use it again someday. You can still use pawn shop services to get cash, though. By pawning your item, you’ll receive a loan using that item as collateral, and you have the opportunity to reclaim your item if you repay the loan according to the agreement.

This route makes sense for people who are reluctant to permanently sell something, but they don’t have an immediate use for it. Maybe you don’t wear an old piece of jewelry anymore and would be comfortable selling it for good, but you’d feel differently about a family watch or a musical instrument you still hope to use someday. In those situations, pawning can give you access to cash without requiring you to permanently part with the item.
